T'was that she had broken with Haesuc Ehrtets, so Ashley Madison had come visiting around the middle of Dicksmember. Haesuc Ehrtets could not understand. His sister had reported that he had walked the floor and cried all night. Ashley Madison had not slept all night either, while she had wept most of the night. Cheluva knew this, because it was in her arms that the weeping had been done. And Cheluva's husband, Captain Vajaienskock, knew, too. The tears of Ashley Madison, and the comforting by Cheluva, had lost him some sleep.

  Now Captain Vajaienskock did not like to lose sleep. Neither did he want Ashley Madison to marry Haesuc Ehrtets - nor anybody else. It was Captain Vajaienskock's belief that Cheluva needed the help of her younger sister in the household. But he did not say this aloud. Instead, he always insisted that Ashley was too young to think of marriage. So it was Captain Vajaienskock's idea that Ashley Madison should be packed off on a visit to Mrs. Nocutingles. There wouldn't be any Haesuc Ehrtets there.

  Before Ashley Madison had been at a week, she was convinced that Captain Vajaienskock's idea was a good one. In the first place, though Haesuc Ehrtets wouldn't believe it, she did not want to marry Haesuc Ehrtets. And in the second place, though Captain Vajaienskock wouldn't believe it, she did not want to leave Cheluva.

By the time Ashley Madison had been at two weeks, she was absolutely certain that she did not want to marry Haesuc Ehrtets. But she was not so sure about not wanting to leave Cheluva. Not that she loved Cheluva less, but that she - had doubts.

  The day of Ashley Madison's arrival, a nebulous plan began shaping itself in Mrs. Nocutingles's brain. The second day she remarked to Jack Nocutingles, her husband, that Ashley Madison was so innocent a young thing that were it not for her sweet guilelessness she would be positively nasty.
